here about corruption and afghanistan, questions whether hamid karzai is a reliable partner and from afghanistan they've been concerned about the civilian casualties after u.s. operations so that sort of sets the scene for this relationship, but at the top of the list, what everyone is focused on is the timetable for u.s. troop withdrawals from afghanistan, as you know, that drawdown supposed to take place in 2014, and there's been some talk here in washington floated about that that number could go down to zero, which concerns some, even over at the pentagon defense secretary panetta saying that that would be a bad idea, but what most likely will be is a few thousand troops on the ground and certainly this is driven by pressure on the president to whether it's political on financial pressure to aggressively draw down troops underground in afghanistan. no doubt that will be part of the discussion today and also as our pentagon folks have been reporting president karzai will be coming to these meetings with a wish list. he needs helicopters. he wants border security surveillance equip

, hamid karzai having lunch with president obama this hour. the two leaders hold a news conference in the next hour. president karzai's visit will help determine how many u.s. troops will remain in afghanistan after the drawdown in 2014. chris lawrence joins us. the white house floated the idea of a zero option, if you like, leaving no troops behind in afghanistan. what's the pentagon think of that and a lot of these people say that really complaint hean'. >> i would say at this point everything is probably still on the table, but you're right, that number zero definitely raise some had eyebrows inside the pentagon. in fact during a press conference yesterday, leon panetta said the stronger position that we take about staying committed and staying in afghanistan, you know, that's how we're going to ultimately get a political reconciliation. in other words, he felt that signaling that the u.s. may pull out all of its troops would weaken the negotiating position about those negotiations with the taliban ever got started again. now, the taliban, that's been one of their demands. all u

face to face right now by these two men, president obama and afghan president hamid karzai. and these two men don't always see eye to eye on those issues and more. cnn's dan lothian is watching this. dan, of course, we're always interested in what they have to say and there's a news conference scheduled for about 1:15 eastern time, but are we exine expecting any big announcements or pronouncements? >> reporter: we've been told by white house aides not to expect any big breakthroughs to come from this meeting. it is a chance for both leaders to sit down and talk about what happens next after 2014, the political, the economic, the security transition. some have suggested, as you said, that they should bring that number down to zero, so zero troops on the ground there after 2014. leon panetta, the defense secretary, saying that that would be a bad idea. what's most likely that there will be a few thousand troops on the ground there in afghanistan after 2014 to help in the transition. there's big concern as to whether or not the afghan forces are prepared, are ready, to handle
